“X-Men” Marked For Life: Discernment Ministry In Light of Ezekiel 9:1-11
Published September 16, 2009 by Pastor Larry DeBruyn
Franklin Road Baptist Church

Someone once said that sin is as much breaking God’s heart as it is His Law. When God looked down on the perversity of the people on earth before the Deluge, it was recorded that He “was grieved in His heart” (Genesis 6:6b). When confronted by resident wickedness both without and within the professing church, Christians can manifest one of three reactions: approval (1 Corinthians 5:2), indifference (Zephaniah 1:12), or disapproval as indicated by the presence of either anger (Psalm 119:53) or grief (Psalm 119:136). So the question becomes, as we see the worldliness-wickedness invading the church, how do we feel about it? Are we agitated by, indifferent to, or accommodating of it?

Not unlike the society and church of our times, during Ezekiel’s ministry Judah found herself in a moral and spiritual “melt down.” Fraud, violence, adultery, and idolatry were running rampant amongst God’s chosen people. Idols had been set up in the Temple (Ezekiel 8:17; 9:9). From his location in Babylon, the Lord took Ezekiel on a virtual reality tour of the Temple, the place where on the Mercy Seat beneath the Cherubim, God’s Shekinah glory was to have been seated (Ezekiel 8:4). What he saw in that place of worship stunned the prophet. On his guided tour of the inner court, the Lord showed the prophet where first the people had substituted an idol image for Yahweh; where second, the elders worshiped animals; where third, the women sobbed over the death of Tammuz, a mythological fertility god who had married the Egyptian goddess Ishtar; and where fourth, the priests worshiped the sun (Ezekiel 8:5-18). Up-close and personal, the prophet saw how the nation had abominated into apostasy, how Israel had turned from worshiping the Creator to idolizing the creation and its creatures (See Romans 1:21-23.).

Yet in the midst of all those “alternative spiritualities,” and like the remnant of Elijah’s day who refused to bow their knee to Baal and kiss the idol god (1 Kings 19:18), some believers preserved themselves to be holy unto the Lord. So the Lord instructed the angel dressed in white to mark an “X” on the foreheads of the faithful, a mark that would spare them from the coming divine judgment (circa 600 BC).[1] Most have heard about “the mark of the beast”, the mark the deceived will receive at the end of the age, an identity without which they will neither be able to buy or sell (Revelation 14:9-12). The prophet Ezekiel wrote about a different mark, an “X” that was to be written on the foreheads of those in Judah who had refused to go along with the popular spiritual trends of that day. The “X” would spare them from the coming divine wrath. So the Lord instructed the angel: “Go through the midst of the city, even through the midst of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst” (Ezekiel 9:4). Pause with me . . . for a moment let’s project back to that era and ask ourselves the following question: If we had been alive in Ezekiel’s day, would the angel have marked us to be spared from divine judgment?

It was a remnant who strongly disapproved of the apostasy of the majority. In the words of the Lord, they groaned and sighed over the “abominations” (Ezekiel 8:6, 9, 13, 15, 17; 9:4) they saw being committed in the name of religion in their midst. What they saw sickened them to the core of their spiritual and emotional being. Would the angel have marked us if we had lived in that day? We should check out our feelings. Charles Feinberg observed: “Grief is always the portion of those who know the Lord in an evil day. The marked ones were penitent and faithful at a time of widespread departure from the will of the Lord.”[2] Another commentator adds that the criterion for receiving the mark was “an affair of the heart–a passionate concern for God and His people. Failing that, there was no mark . . .”[3]

Some in the mainstream Christian media have called those involved in discernment ministry “Christian attack dogs.”[4] Maybe a better metaphor-label would be “Christian guard dogs”! Discerners so love their Master (i.e., the Lord Jesus Christ) and His Bride (i.e., the church) that they agonize to protect His truth and her purity.

Allow me to propose a litmus test as to whether or not we might have been marked in Ezekiel’s day. But before asking some questions, we should note the Apostle Peter’s warning: “But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you” (2 Peter 2:1; Compare Matthew 7:13-15; Jude 17-19.). Based upon Peter’s prediction, does the worldliness that is invading the church bother us? (James 4:4) Does it concern us when we see churches being manipulated by the mechanics of church growth, when the end of growth justifies any means to achieve it? (2 Corinthians 2:17) Does it bother our souls to see the goal of growth eclipsing the Gospel, to see methods employed usurping the Message preached? (Romans 1:16) Does it grieve us to observe the church believing God’s truth less while enjoying “worship celebrations” more? (Matthew 15:8-9) Does the rampant immorality amongst professing evangelicals cause us to sigh? (1 Corinthians 5:2) Were you bothered a few years ago when one evangelical leader, who led a movement in his state to preserve the institution of traditional marriage, was cornered into admitting that he solicited sex from a male prostitute? (Jeremiah 23:14) Do false teachers with their strange and unbiblical teachings annoy you? (Revelation 2:2) Given our media age, does the development of the personality cults around evangelical leaders and speakers, where appearance and a schmoozing style trump substance, concern us? (1 Corinthians 1:12; 2 Peter 2:3; Jude 16) Are some of us even unaware that there are such critters as false teachers who stupefy their followers with their heretical teachings? (Romans 16:17) Does it upset us to see the Christian faith being publicly maligned for reason of the immoral behavior and unbiblical teachings prevalent amongst professing evangelicals? (2 Peter 2:2) In short, are we discerners? (Hebrews 5:14) If we are not, then we should not expect to be marked.

Well, you might be asking, how can we know whether or not a person is a false teacher? Through Jeremiah the Lord provided this description of false prophets: “The prophets are prophesying falsehood in My name. I have neither sent them nor commanded them nor spoken to them; they are prophesying to you a false vision, divination, futility and the deception of their own minds” (Jeremiah 14:14). Of such prophets Jeremiah said that, “They speak a vision of their own imagination, not from the mouth of the Lord” (Jeremiah 23:16b). Again, I ask you, do you know of any false prophets today? You may protest the question saying, “Well, I know men who speak for God who are true.” But that’s not the question. Do you know any false teachers? I know this is a discomforting question–but do you? If you don’t, I would say that you have a very grave problem . . . a very grave problem indeed. And it is this: You may not value God’s truth enough to know what it is and thereby be incapable of discerning “the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error” (1 John 4:4-6).

From his study of human history, a famous historian once remarked how he observed that the majority was seldom right. Jesus agreed. He said: “Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it.” He continued to say, “For the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.” Then the Lord concluded: “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves” (Matthew 7:13-15). Interesting, isn’t it . . . that the Lord warned the multitudes to watch out for false prophets in the very context in which He differentiated the way of the majority from the Way of the minority. Jesus knew that to their own destruction the majority will follow the way of the false prophets and teachers. They will not be marked out for salvation. They will not be “X-Men”. Like the compromisers of Ezekiel’s day, they went along to get along. So allow me to ask you again: Dear Reader, do you know of any false prophets around today, or are you living in denial, in “a spiritual never-never land”? Will you choose to remain unwarned by the very warning that Jesus and the rest of the prophets and apostles warned you about; mainly, that false prophets and teachers will arise who will lead multitudes to walk the broad way leading to destruction? Remember: Seldom is the majority right.

For any Christians concerned to discern, they may be comforted to know they’re taking the narrow Way. A spirit of discernment is symptomatic of true faith. The Lord’s sheep care, yes, even “sigh and groan” when they see fellow evangelicals lapsing into worldliness and ungodliness. Goats however, are unmoved (Matthew 25:31-46). Yet the caring can be comforted to know that their discernment evidences their solidarity with the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Being concerned to discern marks them out– “X” — as true believers (See 1 John 2:18-24.). Yet the overriding emotion of discernment ought to be that of grief. Yes, there may be a time for anger. God gets angry. He was with Ezekiel’s generation, so much so that after He had told the angel in white to mark the believing remnant, the Lord instructed the other six angels, “Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient men which were before the house.” (Ezekiel 9:5b-6). Yet we must remember that, “the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God” (James 1:20).

So it’s truly a sad day when we see those professing to know God believing and behaving as if they do not. So it’s significant to note that the divine judgment was to begin in the sanctuary and then work its way out through Jerusalem and the rest of the entire nation (Compare 1 Peter 4:17.). This order of judgment compelled Paul to command the congregation at Rome: “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple” (Romans 16:17-18, KJV). But if we are to engage in such marking, we ought to be reminded that the accompanying emotion ought to be one of grief. Yet we ought also to be reminded that in the end those who refuse to mark false teachers may not be marked by the Lord to be spared divine judgment.

[2] The mark was the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, a taw (i.e., the Hebrew “T”). Early Christian commentators noted that often the last letter was written as an “X” that could substitute for a person’s signature. See John B. Taylor, Ezekiel (Downers Grove: Inter-Varsity Press, 1969)103. The marking of the faithful finds precedent at the time of Israel’s exodus from Egypt when at the first Passover the Lord instructed the Israelites to “take some of the blood and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel of the houses in which they eat it,” after which He explained: “And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt” (Exodus 12:7, 13).

Is Christianity All About Relationships?
Published September 11, 2009 by Paul Proctor
NewsWithViews.com

Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.Luke 6:26

It seems I am receiving a little extra email these days from troubled Christians who have had to give up a church, some friends and/or certain family members in order to remain faithful to God and His Word. I can tell you without hesitation that I certainly have – and on more than one occasion.

No one can lead you down the road of temptation quicker than a close friend, family member or fellow Christian. The downgrading of today’s “Church” along with society has clearly taken its toll on the brethren and is now driving many out the sanctuary doors to preserve their faith in Jesus Christ.

I heard Authority Research founder and director, Dean Gotcher, in a recent radio interview refer to the loneliness that results from the loss of such relationships as the taking up of one’s cross for Christ. When I respond to the heartbreaking email of readers who have had to leave their local church in obedience to God’s Word, I often reply with some empathetic encouragement and a link to a short piece written by A.W. Tozer titled: The Loneliness of the Christian.

For believers new to this column, I realize that the idea of sacrificing treasured relationships, even those we worship with, is probably a stark contrast to what you regularly receive from the pulpit of your local church and the lectern of your weekly Bible study class where most everything these days revolves around establishing, protecting, sustaining and maintaining relationships of all kinds, at all costs – a dangerous notion that is just not biblical.

Can two walk together, except they be agreed?Amos 3:3

Simply put, it turns people into church worshippers who revere, embrace and obey the consensus of a congregation with a contrived unity rather than God worshippers who put His Word and Authority far and above the fellowship, opinions, theories, life experiences and personal tastes of well meaning Christians and clergy.

This Religion of Relationships has now all but taken over what is called “Christianity” and ought to be called what it really is: “Churchianity” – the worship of and faith in those who claim to be the “Body of Christ” – especially its leaders who treat their own counsel, conjecture, sermon stories and agendas as equal to or greater than the Word of God.

Those who embrace Churchianity will often respond to a rebuking scripture with: “Yeah, but…” as if to be able to trump it with some greater knowledge, wisdom, anecdote or seemingly contradicting verse from the Bible. This is the ugly arrogance of today’s humanistic spirituality and its self-serving, self-worshipping ways.

When listening to a fellow church member, teacher or preacher talk about the Christian life, how many times have you heard them cite that sacred slogan: “It’s all about relationships?” Baloney!

It’s about repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and our loving obedience to His Word, whatever may come – a faithfulness that will cost you more relationships than it will ever garner you! Our first love and loyalty is to Him, not our fellow man. That doesn’t mean we don’t take up the towel to wash feet, serve others, sacrifice ourselves and love our neighbor – it simply means they don’t come first in our lives – Jesus Christ does. That’s why we call Him “Lord” and not the brethren.

But, when we place our hope and faith in the redeemed rather than the Redeemer and put the words of men over the Word of God, we become no better than new agers who believe that God is in everyone and in everything – worshipping the creation instead of the Creator and in doing so, make ourselves gods to be praised and exalted with reciprocating adulation and acclaim.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.Psalm 12:2

If your Christianity isn’t costing you at least some friends and family, both inside and outside the church house, your hope and faith may have turned horizontal. If your Sunday gatherings have become flattery festivals where people are quoted and praised more than Jesus Christ, you might want to reconsider your church membership. If you have friends and family that hate God, but love you, it might be time to reexamine your witness for Christ and your commitment to Him.

And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.Luke 21:16-17

Take a sober and discerning look around your church next Sunday and tell me what you see. If it’s all about relationships there, it may be time to hit the door and go find your cross.

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.Matthew 10:33-39

The Compromise of Tolerance
Published September 20, 2009 by Al Gist
Bible Prophecy Today

I surrendered to the call of preaching the Gospel of my Lord Jesus on the last day of revival services in our home church, July 21, 1985. My “Daddy in the Ministry”, Bro. Jamie Coleman, had preached a fiery message that Sunday and God’s call was more than I could possibly resist. So, with a truly broken and contrite spirit, I fell at the foot of the cross that morning and cried out, “Okay, Lord. I’ll do it!”

We had “dinner on the grounds” after church and after the meal, when almost everyone had left, Bro. Jamie called me and Sandy aside to pray over us and ask God’s blessings on our ministry. In an empty sanctuary, in front of the pulpit, he had us kneel as he placed his hands on our heads. Then, with words from deep within his soul, he poured out his heart to God in an agonizing tone as he interceded in our behalf.

I wish I could remember all of what he prayed that day, but I can’t. I remember the sincerity with which he prayed. I remember the solemnity of the moment. I remember the overwhelming presence of God and the feeling of the huge responsibility that I had just accepted. But I can only remember the closing words of Bro. Jamie’s prayer. And I will never forget those words!

After crying out for God’s greatest blessings to be upon our lives and ministry, this “Hellfire and brimstone” preacher said in a thundering voice,

“And Lord, if he ever compromises on Your Word… kill him!”

Needless to say, you don’t soon forget a prayer like that!

Bro. Jamie was very serious in what he asked from God that day. As much he loved me, he would have rather had God call me home, than to allow me to compromise on the truth of God’s Word in my preaching and teaching, and thereby hinder the Kingdom work. When it comes to our stand on what we KNOW the Bible teaches, there is no room for compromise!

According to an Aug. 25 WorldNetDaily article by Joel Richardson1:

“This year, a group of emergent Christians led by one of the United States most influential pastors, Brian McLaren, has announced that it will actually be “observing” the Muslim holy month, along with a Muslim “partner.” Ramadan is the month that Muslims thank Allah, their god, for revealing the Quran to Muhammad, their prophet. On McLaren’s personal blog, he recently announced his intentions: ‘We, as Christians, humbly seek to join Muslims in this observance of Ramadan as a God-honoring expression of peace, fellowship, and neighborliness.’2

Let’s be perfectly clear about something here…

Islam is a false religion that follows an unholy document (the Quran) in its worship of a false god! Allah, the Muslim god, is NOT just another name for the true God of this universe, as some would tell us. And their unholy writ, the Quran, is NOT just another rendering of “the truth” from God that is on equal footing with the Holy Bible! Islam is idolatry… plain and simple!

So why would anyone calling himself a Christian want to join Muslims in this observance of Ramadan, a month that is set aside to celebrate their false prophet’s revelation of his false god’s instructions to mankind? The answer is found in McLaren’s own words. It is being done as an “expression of peace, fellowship, and neighborliness”, which he calls “God-honoring”. But since when is God honored by condoning, accepting, or participating in idolatry? Certainly, we are to reach out to all people with the love of Jesus. But we do NOT try to reach them by participating in their sinful ways!

When Paul said “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (I Cor. 9:22), he did not imply compromise. But in order to more effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus, the apostle was careful to be considerate of other’s beliefs and traditions. He did not want to offend them and run them away before he could share the Gospel with them.

He said, “unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as [though I also was] under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;” (I Cor. 9:20) But his acting in obedience to the law when he was around Jews who placed such a high importance on observing the law, was not sinful or idolatrous or showing approval of sinful ways. Indeed, if it were possible for us to live in perfect obedience to the law, we would all want to serve God so perfectly.

So, even though Paul knew he had been set free from the “bondage” of the law, he was not deceptive or hypocritical in his approach to those Jews who placed such a high importance on observance of the law. He just tried to be careful and considerate of their ways so that he might have the opportunity to tell them about a more perfect way through faith in Jesus Christ.

The essential part of Paul’s actions was his motivation, which was to bring people to salvation in Christ. He was not doing it as simply an “expression of peace, fellowship, and neighborliness” like McLaren. Nor was he participating in sin in order to reach the sinner. But the liberal left in Christendom have a different motivation. They are all about “peace, fellowship, and neighborliness”.

Over and over again, the expressed motive of this godless ecumenism is world peace and brotherly love (which sounds very good on the surface). And along with apostates like McLaren, the Roman Catholic Church is leading the way. Pope Benedict XVI, at the World Youth Day in Australia last July, “called on around 50 Christian leaders to fight for unity within the broader faith.

‘…My dear friends, I have come to Australia as an ambassador of peace. For this reason I feel blessed to meet you who likewise share this yearning and the desire to help the world attain it.’ The pope later met leaders from the Muslim, Jewish and other faiths, telling them religions had a special role in maintaining peace.”3

For sure, desiring a peaceful existence (Heb. 12:14) and loving all people (Matt. 5:43-44) are Christian attributes. But in doing so, we are to NEVER compromise on our stand for the truth of God!

Because of His unyielding stand on the truth, our Lord Jesus said, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.” (Matt 10:34) And He went on to say that because of Him, people would even be at variance with members of their own family!

Love people with the love of Jesus? Yes! But disregard or participate in their sin in an effort to have peace and acceptance from them? Never! We don’t even do it to “reach” them! Should we drink with the drunkard to reach him? Are we to gamble at the casino to reach its patrons? Are we to dabble in sexual immorality to be more accepted and at peace with the world? Of course not!

And neither do we legitimize idolatry in order to have peace with the idolaters. The Bible is perfectly clear on this:

“…for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?… Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord…” (2 Cor. 6:14b, 17a)

We are to be sanctified (set apart) from the sinful world. And it is through that holiness in us that the lost are drawn to Jesus.

Satan has so sugar-coated and disguised his poison with “peace and brotherly love” that people, even “Christians” are swallowing it in mega-doses. They don’t understand their Bible well enough to even know better. As God said through the prophet Hosea, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:” (Hos. 4:6a).

Today, the doctrine of “tolerance” has become the theology of the world, which should come as no surprise to us since… “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils” (1 Tim. 4:1). And it is this devilish doctrine of “tolerance” that is melding all the religions of the world into one giant conglomerate that the False Prophet will eventually place at the feet of Antichrist. Each religion will be allowed to keep its own individual doctrine, but united by and subservient to the overall umbrella of “tolerance and brotherly love”… a one world religion that will eventually worship the Antichrist.

As for this preacher, there is no room for compromising on the truth of God’s Word. As Paul said, “Woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” (1 Cor 9:16) lest the closing request of Bro. Jamie’s prayer be answered!

The Fall Feasts of Israel
Published September 18, 2009 by Jack Kelley
gracethrufaith.com

(At sunset on Sept. 18, 2009 Israel began year 5770 on the Hebrew Calendar. As I often do with articles that commemorate annual events, I have updated this study on the Fall Feasts and added new information for your review. As you can see, I’m also posting it a day early to coincide with the start of Rosh Hashanah.)

The fall is arguably the most important time of the year in Judaism. Three of Israel’s holiest days are celebrated then, and all in the space of 15 days. They are Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and 5 days after that the week long Feast of Tabernacles. On our calendar they usually fall (no pun intended) some time between mid September and early October due to the differences between the Jewish (lunar) calendar and the western (solar) one.

Each of these holy days has both historical and prophetic significance, the prophetic fulfillment to occur on the day itself. Therefore Christians study them for glimpses into the future as well as to gain a better understanding of Jewish culture.

Happy New Year

Gentiles are sometimes confused in their studies of these holy days by the fact that the Lord changed the Jewish calendar at the time of the Exodus (Exodus 12:2). What had been the 7th month was thereafter to be the first, moving the beginning of the year to the spring, 10 days before Passover.

But because of the harvest, the Jews retained their original calendar as well, so now they have a religious year which begins in the spring and a civil year beginning in the fall. Therefore the Jewish New Year has always been celebrated in the fall and remains so today. This feast is known by two names, Yom Teruah, which means day of blowing but is called the Feast of Trumpets, and Rosh Hashanah, which means “head of the year”.

Rosh Hashanah is a time of new beginnings. According to some Jewish traditions, the creation was completed on Rosh Hashanah, and therefore Adam was born on that day as well.  Many students of prophecy place the birth of the Messiah on Rosh Hashanah, giving the day it’s historical fulfillment, and believe that the beginning of Daniel’s 70th week and 7 years later the Lord’s Second Coming will also occur on Rosh Hashanah, fufilling it’s prophetic significance.

Others think that the Rapture of the Church will happen on Rosh Hashanah, but I’m convinced that the Rapture is a number specific event rather than a date specific one, meaning the Church will be raptured when “the full number of gentiles has come in” making the day and hour unknown to us in advance, except that it will precede Israel’s re-awakening (Romans 11:25) and Daniel’s 70th week. (Acts 15:15-16)

I’m also convinced that Paul’s reference to the Rapture happening at “The Last Trump” (1 Cor. 15:52) should not be used to connect it to the Feast of Trumpets.  He spoke of the same event In 1 Thes. 4:16 saying it would be accompanied by the trumpet call of God.  Some scholars say there are two trumpets of God that recall the two horns of the ram caught in the thicket as Abraham prepared to sacrifice Isaac. They call the Trumpet of Exodus 19:13 the left one, or First Trump, and say that God will call the Israelites back to the Land in the End Times by blowing the right one, or Last Trump.  If, as I suspect, this will occur in conjunction with the Battle of Ezekiel 38, then my belief that the Rapture will take place before Ezekiel’s battle would be confirmed.

Religious Jews believe that in Heaven, books recording the deeds of mankind are opened on Rosh Hashanah for an annual review of man’s behavior. To this end, they spend the previous month in a sincere effort to right all the wrongs they may have committed during the year just ending.

When the books are opened, the names of those whose life has been exemplary in every respect are entered into the book for another year of life, while those who have demonstrated no redeeming qualities at all are scheduled for death. Since normal bell curve distribution would indicate that very few fit at either extreme, the majority are given 10 days until Yom Kippur to “get right with God.” These 10 days are called the Days of Awe where each man’s destiny hangs in the balance as he goes about asking forgiveness from friends and neighbors for sins he’s committed in the year just past. A common greeting among Jews during the Days of Awe is, “May your name be written in the Book.”

On the first afternoon of Rosh Hashanah (it’s a two day celebration) Orthodox Jews go to a running brook or stream where fish swim and throw pebbles or crumbs they’ve gathered into the water, symbolizing God’s casting away of their sins. While doing so, they recite Micah 7:18-20. “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. You will be true to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our fathers in days long ago.”

This is one of the most eloquent descriptions of God’s grace to be found anywhere in Scripture. It reminds God of His promise to be merciful to them in the coming judgment of Yom Kippur.

The fish’s dependence on water symbolizes their dependence on God. The fact that fish can’t close their eyes reminds them to be thorough because God sees everything. This ceremony is called Tashlich, Hebrew for “You will cast”, a reference to hurling their iniquities into the sea in  Micah 7:19.

Judgment Time

Ten days later, on Yom Kippur, judgment is rendered, the books are closed and everyone’s fate is sealed for another year.

Yom Kippur was the only day of the year when it was permissible to speak the Name of God. Yes God does have a name, but it’s not Jehovah or Yahweh. These names were created out of the four letters that Hebrew scribes used to represent God’s name in the Old Testament. Wherever the word LORD appears all in caps, you’ll find the Hebrew letters JHVH, (or YHWH) in the Hebrew text. Theologians call these four letters the tetragrammaton, which is Greek for “four letters”.  So, in effect these four letters are God’s initials, standing for His real name.

Since Hebrew has no vowels, early English language translators added an E, an O, and an A, (vowels they took from from Elohim, a form of the Hebrew word meaning God and Adonai, Hebrew for Lord) to JHVH and created the name Jehovah. We used to think that was God’s name. And in Hebrew the four letters are pronounced yod, hay, wah, hay, which probably gave rise to the “Yahweh” we use today. Neither one is really His name.

It was forbidden for Jews to speak God’s actual name except for once a year on Yom Kippur when it was spoken 10 times. After the Temple was destroyed, the Yom Kippur ceremony gradually changed until the name of God ceased to be used and was subsequently lost.

So no one alive today knows God’s name, and it probably hasn’t been spoken on Earth for about 1700 years. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Philippians 2:9-11 says that Jesus, or if you prefer the Hebrew, Yeshua is now the name above all names.

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Back to Yom Kippur.   During a great and awe inspiring ceremony at the Temple, two goats were brought before the High Priest. One was a goat “for the Lord” to be presented as a peace offering as commanded in Lev. 16:7-10. The other was called “the scapegoat” because all the sins of the nation were symbolically placed upon its head, and then it was led outside the city to be killed. The goat had done nothing to deserve this but was chosen to demonstrate the fact that only the shedding of innocent blood could atone for the sins of the people. The death of the two goats symbolically set aside the sins of the nation, made their peace offering acceptable and gave them peace with their Creator. The people spoke the Name of God in heartfelt thanks.

Here are a couple of interesting tidbits from Jewish tradition.  When the goats were brought before the High Priest, their respective roles in the ceremony were determined by lot. Two golden lots were placed in a golden bowl and as he placed his hand upon the head of each goat, the High Priest reached into the bowl and pulled out one of the lots. Before the cross, the goat that was to be presented to the Lord as a peace offering always turned out to be on the right hand of the High Priest. After the cross it never was.

While the scapegoat was symbolically receiving the sins of the people upon its head a scarlet ribbon was tied from one of its horns to the door of the temple. When the time came for the goat to be taken into the wilderness the ribbon was cut, leaving some on its horn and some on the door. At a predetermined location outside the city, the goat was pushed off a cliff and fell to its death. In all the years before the cross, at the moment of the scapegoat’s death, the remnant of ribbon on the temple door turned from red to white symbolizing the passage from Isaiah 1:18, “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be white as snow.” After the cross this never happened again. The One Who now sits at the right hand of the Father and Who had fulfilled the dual role that the two goats only symbolized had come and forever taken away the sins of all who would choose to accept Him.  (Source: The Fall Feasts Of Israel.  Authors Mitch and Zhava Glaser, Publisher Moody Press.)

The Law Is Only A Shadow …

In Christendom a view holds that the Lord Jesus began His ministry on Yom Kippur announcing in effect that the judgment that was due mankind would be borne by Him (Luke 4:16-21) and that man no longer need live in fear of judgment nor have to endure the 10 Days of Awe every year.

It’s easy to see the Lord in the role of our scapegoat, whose shed blood purchased our pardon forever (Hebrews 10:11-14) but He was also our peace offering. “He is our peace, Who has broken down every wall.” (Ephe 2:14)

In the prophetic sense, Tribulation survivors from the nations will receive their fulfillment of the Yom Kippur judgment in the days immediately following the Lord’s return. This is described to us in the Sheep and Goat judgment (Matt 25:31-46) where Gentiles who’ve cast their sins at the foot of the cross during the Great Tribulation will be granted life in the Kingdom, and those who haven’t will be sent away for death. Their willingness to help believing Jews during the Great Tribulation will be evidence of their faith.  In Matt. 19:28 the Lord told His disciples that the judgment of Jews who survive would take place then, too.

For those of all ages who reject the Lord’s vicarious atonement, the prophetic fulfillment of Yom Kippur will come at the end of the Millennium in the so-called Great White Throne judgment, when all the unsaved dead are brought back to life to be judged according to their works. (Rev. 20:11-15).

Happy Thanksgiving

The Feast of Tabernacles comes five days after Yom Kippur. It was a harvest celebration and is the inspiration for the American Thanksgiving Day. It began as a seven-day feast, later expanded to eight, when all the tithes the Israelites had set aside during the year were brought to Jerusalem for a joyous time of national celebration and thanksgiving for the Lord’s bountiful provision. The aroma of delicious foods cooking over open fires permeated the whole city. For seven days where ever you went there was an air of joy and festivity as the people remembered their Provider and gave thanks. (Deut. 14:22-26).

Historically the Feast of Tabernacles commemorates the time of God’s dwelling with the Israelites in the wilderness. Its prophetic fulfillment comes in the Millennium when the Lord will once again dwell among His people; with the Church in the New Jerusalem (Rev 21) and Israel in Jehovah Shammah, the new name of the Holy City in the Promised Land. (Isaiah 62:2 & Ezekiel 48:35)

Somewhere along the way a water libation ceremony was added to the Feast of Tabernacles. Each morning a procession of priests would descend the steps from the Temple to the Pool of Siloam and dip a silver pitcher into the water.  Carrying the water back to the altar, they would pour it into the ground that had been exposed by the removal of a paving block near the altar, while offering prayers for rain. The purpose of this daily ceremony was to remind God to bring the fall rains needed to prepare the ground for planting. In Israel it doesn’t rain during the summer and the ground gets very hard. Gentle rains are needed to soften the ground so it can be prepared for the fall planting.

On the last day of the feast the High Priest himself would officiate and on this day instead of a silver pitcher one of pure gold would be used. The High Priest would be dressed in all his finest and attended by a huge contingent of similarly attired priests, blowing trumpets, singing psalms, and waving palm branches. When it was first described to me, I was struck by its beauty and pageantry. I’ve since read that extra balconies were set up around the Court of the Priests so more people could observe it.

One year just as the High Priest was about to pour the water into the ground, a loud voice interrupted the ceremony shouting, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (John 7:37-38) It was Jesus and He was referring to the Holy Spirit, who believers would soon receive. This caused many to believe that He was indeed Israel’s Messiah. (We’re not told what the High Priest’s reaction was, but it couldn’t have been pleasant.)

Let’s Get Spiritual

Following the thought that events that were external and physical in the Old Testament are often internal and spiritual in the New, there is a sense in which these holy days also reflect the life of the believer.

As Jesus came to live in the world at His birth (Rosh Hashanah), so He comes to live in our hearts at our new birth. As He required the shedding of innocent blood to reconcile Himself with Israel (Yom Kippur) so He shed His own Blood to reconcile Himself with us. As He dwelt with the Israelites in the wilderness of Midian (Tabernacles), so He dwells with us in the wilderness of Earth. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age,” He promised. (Matt 28:20) Even so, Come Lord Jesus. (Rev. 22:20) You can almost hear the Footsteps of the Messiah.

Israeli Attack By December
Published September 16, 2009 by Dennis Lingo
Watching And Waiting

Yes, we posted “Huge Rumors of War” yesterday which hilighted a WSJ article saying that Obama may be pushing Israel into a corner where they will be forced to attack Iran…certainly by Spring of 2010.

Today the news is in the Jerusalem Post saying that an attack of Iran may have to come by December of 2009.

“We cannot live under the shadow of an Iran with nuclear weapons,” he was quoted as telling Reuters in an interview on a visit to the UK. “By the end of the year, if there is no agreement on crippling sanctions aimed at this regime, we will have no choice.”

Sneh reportedly stressed that a military strike would be “the very, very last resort. But ironically it is our best friends and allies who are pushing us into a corner where we would have no option but to do it.”

Sneh reportedly explained that Jerusalem could not accept a nuclear-armed Iran because government processes would be “substantially distorted,” as the cabinet’s decision making would be hostage to the fear of Teheran’s nuclear retaliation.

See article here: We May Have To Attack Iran By December

As we have said in the past, the Iranians invented the game of chess….and their is no doubt that Satan is positioned behind their belief in the 12th Imam’s imminent return….so if the world does nothing to stop Iran, they have us in “Check”….and if Israel attacks Iran and turns world opinion against the Jews and creates untold chaos…Iran has us in “Check”.

So what would be considered “Check-mate” to the Iranian leaders and Satan??….maybe a Shahab missile armed with a nuclear warhead ready to explode over Tel Aviv and destroy the nation of Israel once and for all.

And the Jews say, “Never again!”

What Is Money…Really?
Published September 12, 2009 by Jerry Robinson
Bible Prophecy Today

There is an old joke about money that says while it may not buy happiness, it sure does buy everything else. Benjamin Franklin referred to man’s obsession with money this way: “He that is of the opinion money will do everything may well be suspected of doing everything for money.”

I believe one’s view of money is formed and fashioned by 3 prevailing factors:

(1) The most dominant factor affecting a person’s view of money is the economic system into which one is born. For example, those of us born in the U.S. are introduced to a capitalistic system from birth. Its espoused virtues are the right to private property, the division of labor, individual rights, and so forth. In contrast, those born in China inherit a communistic economic system. There individuals have fewer rights, and the government plays a much greater role in every aspect of life.

(2) The next most important factor affecting one’s view of money is family financial philosophies. Parents valuing consumption teach their children not to save. Those exemplifying a strong work ethic teach that money is best earned through hard work. Other parents may be business owners and thus teach money can be accumulated by employing the efforts of others.

(3) Finally, one’s view of money is shaped by religious and moral understandings of life itself. Some from strict Christian upbringings may [incorrectly] view money as inherently evil. Others see money simply as amoral, an object or tool for accomplishing goals. Two of the most common questions about money are, “how much money do I have?,” and, “how can I get more money?” But understanding the system on which we depend for our livelihoods requires more foundational questions like, “what is money?” “how is money measured?” “what gives money its value?” and, “if money can be printed, why not print more?”

Used to be, money in the U.S. was backed by “all the gold in Fort Knox.” Today, however, ours is a fiat currency and has been since 1971 when then-President Richard M. Nixon detached the U.S. dollar from the gold standard. 2009 dollars are not backed by any type of commodity – not gold, not silver, not iron, not corn nor wheat. In fiat currencies, only one thing gives money its value – scarcity. The more scarce the supply of money, the lower the prices of goods and services. The reverse is also true – the higher the supply of money, the higher the prices.

Today’s dollar is losing value everywhere, due in large part to excessive printing by the federal government. Other contributing factors are the government’s lack of a strong fiscal policy and a growing aversion by foreign nations to buy and hold U.S. dollars. Today’s dollar is now worth less than 10% of its value in 1945.

  • Against the Euro, the dollar has lost 65%
  • Against the Swiss franc, the dollar has lost 18.2%
  • Against the British pound, the dollar has lost 42.6%
  • Against the Australian dollar, the U.S. dollar has lost 75.6%
  • Against the Japanese yen, the dollar has lost 18.2%

During the first 207 years of our country’s history (1776-1983), the supply of money increased $2.7 trillion. In the next 14 years alone, the supply of money increased an additional $2.5 trillion; and, in the 4 years from 1997 to 2001, the supply of money increased still an additional $2.5 trillion. All due to the federal government printing additional quantities of money, not replacing worn-out dollars, but additional dollars.

Part of the problem with our declining dollar is our national obsession with owning everything in sight. Madison Avenue promotes the next technology gadget and some of us have to have it the day it’s available, regardless of cost. The other part of our declining dollar is due to the federal government. As long as the debt-loving, interest-rate cutting, currency-printaholic feds can’t seem to find the “off” switch on the printing press, the dollar will continue declining in value and in purchasing power.

Will It Really Be This Obvious America?
“Those Who Don’t Learn From History Are Doomed To Repeat It”

Are We On A Slippery Slope To Fascism?
Published September 4, 2009 by Jan Markell
Olive Tree Ministries

I have been troubled as I hear people saying that America is heading down a Socialist or Fascist path very similar to what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. But I must now acknowledge that these observers are much more right than wrong. One article that convinced me was Joseph Farah’s editorial on World Net Daily for August 11, “None Dare Call it Totalitarianism.” He wrote a follow-up on WND August 17 listing the comparisons to Nazi Germany. I do not always agree with Farah, but I feel he has done his homework on the above.

On Understanding the Times” radio this past weekend, I had Holocaust survivor Anita Dittman share her insights on this topic. Both she and her mother were sent to concentration camps and were scheduled to be gassed but were spared by one miracle after another. Both were Jewish believers in Jesus. They saw first-hand how Germany had morphed into a Fascist dictatorship.

So, is America on that slippery slope? Unless the church gets much more involved in restoring America, I would have to say yes. It seems secular humanism is the primary religion in America today as churches grow more and more silent and stray from sound teaching. And government is god.

How can we learn from Nazi Germany’s mistakes? Is there time to reverse what is happening in our great nation?

In Germany, “mercy killing” became the policy. Over 270,000 handicapped people were killed because in Germany, murder had become “mercy.” Pastors went to call on their elderly members in hospitals and they had disappeared.

Anita pointed to many other troubling issues, as the people were primed for a dictator with promises from Hitler, even if they were all false. Then the government took over private business, industry, and health care.

Hitler took control of the airwaves. He allowed no dissenters. Barack Obama has recently appointed Mark Lloyd, an extreme Leftist in ideology, as head of the FCC. He is not bashful in saying that he is going to fine conservative/Christian networks for presenting the kind of programming they do. The nearly $250 million fine money will be turned over to National Public Radio (NPR). Obviously no network could survive such a fine when radio today is suffering like many other industries. While you may think he will only target Rush and Sean, I assure you that “Understanding the Times” radio is in the crosshairs.

Pastors in Germany came under the gun – literally. If they spoke against Hitler or his policies, they were punished. We have “hate crime” laws in America now that have pastors and other good and righteous people targeted.

Anita Dittman recalls that many of the German people were blind. They were in a daze. And, they were biblically illiterate, even if they were long-time church members. Most churches had been watered down and thus marched willingly along, making no effort to stand for truth. Perhaps, had they been biblically grounded, they might not have caved.

In Germany, Fascism was basically Socialism. The Obama administration could very well be destroying the free-market system – as did Hitler, knowing that people will have no place to turn except to government – and this government wants to institute Socialism. Newsweek magazine said months ago in its cover story, “We Are All Socialists Now.” Not quite yet, but we’re heading there.

Secular humanism and Darwinian evolution were pushed in Germany. The government was god and the leader, Hitler, was a messiah-type figure. Anita remembers what oratory skills he had. He edged his way onto the political stage thanks to his communication abilities and the many promises he made. He had charisma and a charming smile that made the country trust him. Economic times were tough as people didn’t have jobs so Hitler used all the skills he had to win over the country. The Socialist Germany would be the ultimate nanny state and take care of everything. Germany would soon be a proud nation again.

Joseph Farah asks in the first article I referred to,

“What do you call it when government-created joblessness is used to promote policies of government control? What do you call it when the government exceeds its authority under the Constitution and ignores any limits of power? What do you call it when the government strikes fear into the hearts of the sovereign citizens it is supposed to serve? What do you call it when government seeks to take over the private and personal health care decisions of people, establishing bureaucracies to make life-and-death decisions and banning unapproved transactions between doctors and patients?”

He continues,

“Everything for which America has stood for the last 230 years is under attack – not by angry mobs, nor citizen lawlessness, and not from threats by external enemies. The threat is from those in charge of government. Americans are being seduced into serfdom and slavery. The specter of totalitarianism hovers like a dark cloud dressed up in euphemisms that would make Stalin, Hitler, and Mao Zedong proud.”

We can live in denial or we can call the church into action and individuals to prayer. If America remains a praying nation, some of the worst can be averted. So, will American Christians – and Christians everywhere – step up to the plate? Many believers are in a state of apathy and others are becoming more and more biblically illiterate.

And a nation like America is only as strong as her churches are strong.

In spite of some of the commentary coming from Anita Dittman, her book is a faith builder! All readers report that it is also a life-changer. It puts suffering into perspective. She believed that all things worked together for good during her ordeal and she lived to see that come true.

The World Hates The Word of God (Part 1)
Published September 1, 2009 by Pastor Adam Gislason
Great Adventure Ministries

Good morning. My name is Pastor Adam Gislason with Great Adventure Ministries and for those of you who haven’t been here in the past to hear me speak, my wife Amelia and I travel around the state of Minnesota speaking to churches, conferences, camps, leadership teams, youth groups and small groups on current events as they relate to Bible prophecy.

Some of the topics include the current Global Economic Crisis, America, Israel and False Teachings and Movements that are threatening the Christian church today. And then from time to time, I get the wonderful opportunity like I am today to provide pulpit supply for churches whose pastors are on vacation, sabbaticals or churches that are in transition. So thank you for having us back again and we pray that today you will be edified, encouraged and challenged by the written Word of God.

I would like to start our by reading to you an article that we posted on our website a couple of days ago that ties in nicely with the message for today that was written by Jan Markell from Olive Tree Ministries back on August 24, 2009 entitled, “Was God In The Whirlwind” (Click Here To Read This Article).

I have entitled the message this morning, “The World Hates The Word of God.”

Why does the world hate the Word of God and the church? Well, the world hates the Word of God and the church because Satan (our adversary) is directly opposed to everything that the Word of God stands for which is everything that we stand for as believers in the Gospel who is Jesus Christ.

Today, I want us to look into some of the things that God wrote through the apostle Paul in Romans 1 concerning the World vs. The Word of God remembering that as we do, “All Scripture is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God can be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). If you don’t believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God that was written through man by the power of His Holy Spirit or if the Bible isn’t your final authority in life, then the Scriptures that we are going to discuss today won’t mean much to you.

Turn with me if you have your Bibles to Romans 1:16-32.

The World Hates The Word of God (Romans 1:16-17)

The world hates the Word of God because the Word of God is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. The world hates that we, the true church, believe verses 16-17. The world hates the fact that Jesus is the only way. The world hates the fact that the just shall live by faith. Simply put, the world hates the Word of God-all of it.

And Satan (our adversary) does not want anyone to know that the Bible is the Word of God. Satan does not want the world to find out that they can be rescued or saved from God’s coming wrath and judgment on mankind, which by the way I personally believe is coming sooner, rather than later. Therefore, he has put the word out (no pun intended), among many other falsehoods and lies such as “Men wrote the Bible, not God”, that God is the “Universal Father to the brotherhood of man.”

In other words, God is the father of the first Adam (Adam & Eve) from whom all mankind is descended and therefore all people are God’s children. This false doctrine is being preached today in both outside and inside the church. And quite honestly to be blunt, it makes me sick to my stomach-especially those professing the Christian faith. This is not what the Word of God teaches. We are all God’s creation, but we do not become a child of God until we have confessed to God that we are sinners, repent from our sin and follow Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. John 1:12 says, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” So without receiving Him and believing in His name, we cannot be a child of God.

But many people today, even many within the church, seem to think that we are all children of God-all heirs to His throne. And it makes me think, “What Bible are they reading?” It seems everywhere we turn today there is an onslaught of liberal ideology that tells us what the devil wants us to believe-lies. Look no further than country music. Alan Jackson sings these words:

Here comes a Baptist, here comes a Jew
There goes a Mormon and a Muslim too
I see a Buddist and Hindu
I see a Catholic and I see you

We are all God’s children
We are all God’s children
We are all God’s children
Why can’t we be one big happy family?

Well, the truth is, we can be one big happy family. The door is always open for people to repent and turn to Christ in order to be saved from God’s coming wrath and judgment. But the reality is the world hates the Word of God because the Word of God is the power of God for Salvation for everyone who believes. And not only that, but the world hates the Word of God because the righteousness of God is revealed in it.

Now you might be asking, “What does the righteousness of God have to do with mankind?” Simply put, God is the standard of right and wrong and His Word (the Bible) helps us to see that. But the world refuses to agree. To them their standard of right and wrong is determined by themselves (man). If it feels good, do it. If it sounds like a good idea to me, do it. For example, secular humanists cling to the theory of evolution as truth. Nothing could be further from the truth! Evolution is just a theory. To be honest, it takes more faith to believe that we came from a rock than to believe in a Creator (God) who created the earth and all that’s in it-including us!

Think about it-if mankind is nothing more than a highly adapted animal, with this life being all that there is, then there is no higher moral law with which to concern ourselves. With only human laws, people will risk the odds in getting caught to engage in detestable behavior. If this life is all there is, then people can do whatever they want, whenever they want and the only authority they have to answer to is themselves or other people. And if enough people live by this philosophy, either anarchy (general disorder from lack of government) or an autocracy (government by a single individual ruler) will be the result.

I happen to think that we, as a country here in America, are heading for the latter. And the Bible makes it clear that the latter is eventually going to happen in Revelation 13:7 which says, “It was granted to him (the antichrist) to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given to him over every tribe, tongue and nation.” Is Obama the antichrist? I personally don’t think so, but at a minimum he is a foreshadow of what is to come in Revelation 13:7.

You see here’s the thing-if secular humanists admitted there was a higher moral law (God), then they would eventually have to conclude that we are all judged. And by this implication there then must also be some reason to be judged-reasons such as reward or loss, heaven or hell. And if we are judged, then who does the judging? And by what standards are we judged? How good is good enough? How can we be certain what is right or wrong?

The Bible has the answers to all these questions, but the secular humanists avoid the issues by denying the existence of a higher moral law. And so the world hates the Word of God because the Word of God is the power of God for Salvation for everyone who believes. And not only that, but the world hates the Word of God because the righteousness of God is revealed in it. And not only that, but the world hates the Word of God because it tells us that the just shall live by faith.

There are those who believe that unless you belong to a certain church, you cannot be saved (go to heaven). St. Augustine who died in A.D. 430 said this, “No man can find salvation except in the Catholic Church. Outside the Catholic Church one can have everything except salvation. One can have honor, one can have sacraments, one can sing alleluia, one can answer amen, one can have faith in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost and preach it too, but never can one find salvation except in the Catholic Church.”

Nothing could be further from the truth! When I read things like this (along with many other false doctrines within the Catholic Church), it makes me wonder why those of us who are products of Martin Luther’s 16th century Reformation are so quick to re-marry with the Catholics. Catholics and Protestants Together! I don’t get it. If you do your homework, not much has changed since the Reformation. The Catholic Church has not repented from many of Martin Luther’s 99 points that he nailed on their doors in the 16th century with his thesis and they have not repented from new deceptions since then.

Satan loves deception and he wants nothing more than to lie and deceive us.

There are those who say that all will ultimately be saved and if you are sincere about your beliefs, then that’s good enough. I wonder how many sincere souls there are in Hades awaiting the Great White Throne Judgment? The Bible clearly states that we are saved by grace through faith-nothing more, nothing less. We cannot work our way to heaven.

The World Suppresses Truth (Romans 1:18-21)

God’s displeasure with sinful man has been revealed. Let’s face it-if we were left to our sinful nature without the option to repent and be saved, we would be just like the humanists and atheists. I mean, after all, “Sin is just a natural expression of who we are at the very core isn’t it?” No!!! Verses 18-19 say that God’s displeasure is revealed because His very nature has been revealed to them and in fact is manifest in them, but they suppress it.

Why? Because they don’t want to know that they are children of darkness.

John 3:20 says, “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his evil deeds should be exposed.” God’s displeasure with sinful man has been revealed. And God’s nature has been revealed. It is relatively simple to look at creation, especially here in northern Minnesota, and come to the conclusion that there must have been a Creator. Let’s be honest-it’s far too complicated for everything to have happened by accident. And as I said before, it takes more faith to believe in the accident vs. Creator. And so by looking at the created things one is brought to the point of decision: Is there a God who created all things or not? And if there is, what do I do with Him?

Those who decide to err on the side of evolution do so at their own peril. Verse 20 says, “They are without excuse.” Look, if I put a twenty-dollar bill in your hand for you to see my goodness, but you say, “It’s not real, it’s a counterfeit-I don’t want it.” Does it make that twenty-dollar bill any less valuable as currency? But you think in the back of your mind, “What if it is real?” Then you begin to wonder about it. You look at it. You feel it. You take it and spend it and it works! God’s revelation of Himself works the same way. God’s displeasure with sinful man has been revealed. God’s nature has been clearly revealed. And God’s nature has been denied. Paul writes, “Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God.”

Secular humanists and atheists rely totally on science to explain everything. In reality, natural law has become their God. Natural law is a description of what has been observed to happen when certain conditions occur (i.e. the law of gravity states that if something falls from the sky, it will eventually hit the ground). Anything contrary to that defies natural law and therefore cannot be true. Now I am not saying that science is anti-God. As a matter of fact, science and the Bible complement each other quite well. But when man’s knowledge begins to take precedence over God’s eternal power, then they, as Paul writes about in verse 21, become futile in their thoughts and their foolish hearts are darkened. These people refuse to allow room for anything supernatural to exist. If it cannot be explained logically, then it isn’t true.

The World Hates The Word of God (Part 2)
Published September 1, 2009 by Pastor Adam Gislason

The Word Professes Wisdom (Romans 1:22-32)

Paul is nicely saying they are becoming fools. Paul wrote to the church Corinth, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.’ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”

Folks, it’s time to wake up-especially those of us who call ourselves Christians. American society is quickly going the way of Europe. It is quickly headed towards a fall. As a matter of fact, I believe we have been watching much of that fall right before our very eyes over this past year and we are nearing rock bottom, much like that of the Roman Empire. There is an old saying that says, “Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” When you compare the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire to America today, the facts are staggering:

The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:

*Family Life Disintegrated
*Traditional Ethical Systems Were Ignored For “Anything Goes”
*Entertainment Became Perverse And Immoral
*Vast Amounts of Money Were Spent On Military
*The Economy Collapsed

Is America repeating history? Is this prophecy? Or both?

The true born again Christian population is on a fast track to becoming a minority segment of western society. God is being taken out of the government, out of schools and out of the every day lives of mainstream America.

Why? Because it is foolish to believe that there is a God who cares and even if there is, “You don’t have the right to force Him on anyone else!” Secular wisdom prevails and the church appears unable to stop it. The world is becoming fools. And not only becoming fools, but confused.

What is replacing God in school? Every perverted type of thought imaginable. Condoms are passed out to those who ask. Abortions are available for the asking. Homosexuality is taught as a perfectly normal “alternative lifestyle.” Discipline is removed and absurd behavior is encouraged. Teachers who fail students are asked to resign. Teachers who even look at students in the wrong way are getting sued. Kids are passed to the next grade because to “hold them back” would destroy their self-esteem.”

And let me share something with you about self-esteem. This will probably ruffle some feathers, but that’s what truth does-it ruffles feathers. Listen, we are not to have self-esteem. The Bible says that we are to die to self. We are not to live for self-fulfillment, but rather self-denial. It’s good to have low self-esteem because who are we to esteem? Christ! We are not called to think highly of ourselves or to have a positive self image. Why is this being taught in the church today by people like Robert Schuller? By the way, do your homework and see what it happening to the empire of Robert Schuller.

What else is replacing God in the schools? Test scores are modified so that even mediocre students look brilliant. Drugs and alcohol are readily available if you look, but don’t bring your Bible to school. In verse 24, Paul writes, “Therefore, God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.” The more influence the secularists have, the more god will give them over to their base reasoning and allow them to move toward the godless society that they are looking for. They have “Exchanged the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.” These who consider themselves “wise” have brought us to a place of decision. Western society has now begun to worship itself as the savior of the world. The liberal agenda has not reached a climax-you haven’t seen anything yet!

And once God is taken out of our culture, there is nothing to stop the god of this world, Satan, from moving forward to claim his place as the dominant influence of our time and to drag millions with him to the final place of torment, called the lake of fire (hell). Don’t try to convince anyone of the need to have God in the culture. You’re just an ignorant, narrow minded, myth-believing bigot who only wants to control the world and force your religion down the throats of decent people who know the real truth. There is no place for you any longer in this world. Enlightened people know what is best and God is not the answer.

In 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Paul wrote this prophecy to Timothy, “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come. For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness, but denying its power.”

I really believe that we are living in the last days. Satan seems to cramming for a final. As you look at all that is happening in our world economically, politically and biblically-the signs of the times are on the wall. The world is becoming foolish. The world is becoming confusing. The world is becoming perverted. Paul writes in verses 26-27, “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions: For their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural. And in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another-men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”

How can people say after reading this passage of Scripture that God is silent on the issue of homosexuality? Why this topic is even being debated in the church is beyond me. The Bible is clear concerning the issue of homosexuality from Leviticus 20:10-13 to Deuteronomy 23:17-18 to Romans 1:19-32 to 1 Corinthians 6:9. God clearly states in His word that homosexuality is sin-period. And that unless those who practice homosexuality don’t repent, they will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9). But let me make one thing crystal clear. God loves homosexuals, but hates their sin and desires that they confess their sin to Him, repent (which means to turn) and return to a single or hetrosexual lifestyle the way God intended it from the beginning.

The problem is we have allowed the world and the media to control our thinking. That’s probably because the average Christian spends much more time listening to the media than they do studying and obeying the Word of God. How sad is that? Gay marriage is one of the most talked about issues today. We now have six states that have legalized gay marriage. The ELCA (The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) has now decided to ordain homosexual pastors. What’s next? Where is this heading? What’s happening to America? I would suggest to you Bible prophecy-just as God said would happen in the last days.

God speaks rather openly through Paul about homosexual relationships in verses 22-32. He says that (1) Homosexuality is unnatural. Many say (even within the church) that it is natural. They say that they were born with a homosexual nature. That is a lie from the pit of hell. Paul says they have made choice, “Not retain God in their knowledge.” Scientifically, how do you explain when two twins are born-one is homosexual and one is not. Paul also says that, (2) Homosexuality is shameful. Even centuries before when two angels went to rescue Lot and were accosted by the men of Sodom, who wanted to know them carnally, Lot replied, “Please my brethren, do not do so wickedly.” Marriage was ordained by God to be between a man and a woman and it is the institution that He loves. The world doesn’t want to hear that today. Try it before your buy it they say (living together). (3) And finally Paul says that (3) Homosexuality is deserving of penalty. Is AIDS God’s punishment for homosexual activity? If so, why are so many children dying from AIDS around the world? They would appear to be innocent. Most of the children are innocent. But think about it-Satan doesn’t care about innocence. He is doing everything he can to drive perversion right into the heart of our culture here.

And here’s a good example: The NAMBLA (North American Man/Boy Love Association) is behind numerous lawsuits to make it legal for men to have sex with underage boys. Their motto is, “Sex before eight or it’s too late.” I’m not making this up. Here’s another example: The AIDS epidemic in Africa is driven by the lie that if a man with aids can have sex with a virgin, his disease will be removed. I’m not making this up.

The truth is that AIDS and STD’s are on the rise and it is mainly among homosexuals. From 1999-2003, HIV infections have risen 17% among homosexual men. Imagine what that statistic is today. Homosexuals account for 50% of AIDS cases in the U.S., but account for only 3-5% of the population. STD’s are also on the rise among homosexuals. And there are many more statistics, but the point is this: Satan is destroying lives and using a small percentage of the population to do it.

But if you talk about homosexuality being wrong, you are a gay basher. Once again, let me be clear: God loves homosexuals, but hates their sin and desires that they confess their sin to Him, repent (which means to turn) and return to a single or hetrosexual lifestyle the way God intended it from the beginning. Paul goes on to say the perversion doesn’t stop with homosexuality. There is a general perversion of truth that allows people to do those things which are not fitting (verse 28).

The bottom line in verse 32 is that God has given all what is called “common grace”-that is the knowledge of right and wrong. And even so, Paul writes, “And although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.”

We are called as Christians to judge right and wrong. Not a person’s salvation as to whether they are going to heaven or hell, but right and wrong. Sadly today, truth has become judgment.

The world is standing by, looking at the church and laughing. We are sanctimonious bigots who are hypocritical and narrow minded. We are portrayed as a people of little intelligence who accept the things of the Bible with blind faith. We are the ones that need to be enlightened so we can accept everyone as God’s children and therefore brothers and sisters.

All roads lead to heaven-that’s what they say. No they don’t. Many roads lead to hell. Jesus is not the only way-that’s what they say. Yes, He is. And if we don’t stop interfering with the rights of others to live their lives the way they choose, then we are not Christians and we are the ones destined for hell, if there is such a place.

Well, I am here this morning to say that I am not ashamed of the Gospel of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The world can laugh at me and persecute me all they want. They can throw me jail and take away everything I have. They can threaten me, my family and take away my life, but it doesn’t change a thing. I am saved by the incredible grace of God. Jesus in my Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit is my guide in this life.

When I first came to know Jesus, I was baptized in the power of God, to know the will of God and speak the Word of God, to a world without God, that the world might receive the inheritance of God and live in the Kingdom of God, in the eternal city of God, where we will worship God forever.

The apostle Peter was right when he wrote that, “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts.” That time is now. But let them laugh at us. Let them demean us. Let them persecute us. Some day they’ll see. Some day they won’t be laughing anymore in their eternal resting place where there will be the wailing and gnashing of teeth, in the place of fire where they will cry out for mercy, in the place the Bible calls “Hell” where it will be too late-too late because they didn’t listen.

And as I stand before the throne and worship the King of all creation, they won’t be laughing anymore. They won’t be able to scoff any longer. As I receive the crown of righteousness and cast it before the throne and fall down before the Mighty One, their snide remarks and hatred for all that is right will be just an echo of the past.

Then they will realize that they should have listened. But until then, Jesus leaves us with this command. He says, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you that you may be sons of your father in heaven.”

Satan is the god of this world, but we have overcome the world by the blood of the Lamb and the Word of His testimony. Amen.
