While many Christians were instantly all “ga-ga” about senator John McCain appointing governor Sara Palin as his vice presidential running mate a couple of months ago, I can remember a still small voice inside of me quietly asking a few questions: Who is Sara Palin? What does she stand for? And why are so many Christians so quickly jumping on the Palin bandwagon when they don’t even really know her? Should a woman lead our country? How will she be able to be a vice president or president and a mom at the same time while having a pregnant teenage daughter and a down syndrome son who really needs her first and foremost? And as a professed Christian, what example is she setting for other Christians, especially women?

I, for one, didn’t catch a ride on the Palin bandwagon.

I suddenly realized that what I was witnessing in political Christian circles was the same thing that I have been witnessing in the Christian church over the past several years-a lack of discernment. Anytime “ga-ga” is present, discernment is usually absent.

Let’s be honest. Both political and biblical illiteracy is running rampant in Christianity today. Many of us don’t take the time to know who our candidates really are and what they stand for. Likewise, many of us don’t take the time to know God’s Word and what He really stands for.

Take the issue of dividing Israel for example. What does God say about dividing Israel? Before you read any further, test yourself and first try to answer the question. Genesis 12:3 says that those bless Israel will be blessed and those who curse Israel will be cursed. Joel 3:1-3 says that all nations will be judged by God himself for dividing up Israel.

And so in light of these truths about dividing Israel, would it be safe to say that we as Christians should bless Israel? Would it be safe to say that we as Christians should not curse Israel? Would it be safe to say that we as Christians should not divide Israel? And would it be safe to even say that we as Christians should not be voting for anyone who is in favor of or associated with dividing Israel?

If you answered yes and you’re voting for McCain and Palin on November 4th, you’re in trouble because McCain and Palin, who claim to be Pro-Israel, are not really Pro-Israel (none on the 2008 Election Ballot are). In fact, they want to divide Israel and give the Palestinians a state. Governor Palin said this at the vice presidential debate concerning the land of Israel: “A two-state solution is the solution.”

The following post dated October 5, 2008 from the Jerusalem Watchmen says it all:

“It is NOT the solution if those two states are carved out of the land of Israel, whose borders have been clearly demarcated in Scripture, which also states that the return of that land to Jewish sovereignty is God’s doing. Furthermore, according to the Bible, all nations will be judged by God Himself for dividing up that land (Joel 3:1-3).

Supporting “two states” supports dividing the land between an ancient nation that has biblical, historical and traditional rights to it and a non-nation that has none of these rights but which has garnered global support for its illegitimate territorial claims through terrorism, violence, murder and threats.

“Land-for-Peace” is an immoral policy and a bankrupt one.

70 years ago this year, Britain and France forced Czechoslovakia to give the Sudetenland to Hitler to appease him and prevent war. Instead, this betrayal of the Czechs led directly to World War II and untold millions of deaths.

Successive U.S. administrations have pressured Israel into giving the cradle of Jewish civilization to the Arabs to appease them and keep the Middle East stable. Instead the surrender of these lands to the Arab world has fueled their hunger to get it all and is setting the stage for another massive war.

The U.S has no business trying to play “honest broker” between Israel and those who are out to destroy Israel. Instead America should, because of its Judeo-Christian heritage and values, be unapologetically and unmistakably on Israel’s side.

Supporting the two-state solution will deprive a McCain-Palin administration of God’s blessing. Neither will there be inroads to victory in any of the other battles in your cultural war while the White House continues to support and push for “land-for-peace.” Reversing this policy will require immense moral courage and great statesmanship. But doing so will bring God’s abundant blessing. For the Almighty, supporting Israel is not an issue. It is THE issue.”

Which begs a final question: If it’s “THE” issue for the Almighty, shouldn’t the divine foreign policy established centuries ago through the Abrahamic covenant be “THE” issue for us as Christians as we head to the polls on November 4th?

The blood won’t be on my hands.

Implications of this Financial Apocalypse

The U.S. is experiencing the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression. Our enemies know it. They smell blood in the water. Consider the latest developments:

• “Wall Street stocks plunged Wednesday in the second biggest single day point loss in history and their worst percentage fall in two decades, ravaged by fears the world’s biggest economy is slipping into recession. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 733.08 points (7.87 percent) to close at 8,577.91 in the worst one-day point loss since last month’s record 777-point decline and the steepest percentage drop since 1987. In an even more brutal decline, the broad-market Standard & Poor’s index plunged 90.17 points (9.03 percent) to 907.84.” (AFP)
• “We are living through financial history of the tragic kind. As of Friday’s close, America’s stock market had declined in value by well over 40 per cent compared with its peak a year ago. Already, this ranks as the fifth biggest stock market decline since the 1920s.” (U.K. Independent)
• “U.S. stocks [in recent days have] plunged the most since the crash of 1987, hammered by the biggest drop in retail sales in three years and growing doubt that plans to bail out banks will keep the economic slump from deepening….The S&P 500 has tumbled 38 percent in 2008 as losses and writedowns from mortgage-related investments at financial firms worldwide topped $640 billion….The S&P 500 has tumbled 42 percent from its Oct. 9, 2007, record and the Dow has lost 39 percent from its peak the same day.” (Bloomberg News)
• ”Japan’s key stock index plummeted more than 11 percent, South Korean shares shed 9.25 percent, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index was down 4.8 percent. Floowing Asia’s lead, benchmarks in Britain, Germany and France slipped about 3 percent. Russia’s RTS also fell.” (AP)
• “U.S. Forces Nine Major Banks To Accept Partial Nationalization” — Washington Post
• “The White House said G8 leaders were expected to meet this year on the worst financial crisis since the 1930s Great Depression. Governments around the world have pledged $3.2 trillion in emergency measures — roughly an equivalent to the economic output of Germany or China — including taking stakes in banks to help them stabilize, rallying world markets on Monday and Tuesday. But optimism quickly gave way to fears that government intervention would not save major economies from recession.” (Reuters)

This is not a temporary glitch in the global financial software. The problems are real, deep and systemic. The best explanations and analysis I have seen have come from Steve Forbes, editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, the nation’s foremost business             magazine (see Steve’s recent columns).

The big question now: What does it all mean and where do we go from here? A few thoughts on the implications of this financial apocalypse:

America’s Invincibility Shattered

Americans have been guilty of a sense of invincibility. Since we excel at nearly everything and have an unrivaled quality of life, most Americans feel nothing could bring us down. Until October 2008.

Now we have seen that even our economic dominance is in jeopardy. Threatened by a financial tsunami, The People’s Daily out of China states, “The world must consider building a financial order no longer dependent on the United States.”

The Washington Times had a bold headline October 1, 2008, reading, “Foreign Economists Urge ‘Global Plan.’” The story went on to say, “Leaders and economists from Western Europe to East Asia urged that America go beyond reviving a failed domestic bailout and start working on a new global financial system.
